SUMMARY

This article describes how to use .wav and .mid sound files with messages that you send in Microsoft Chat.

MORE INFORMATION

The sound file is not actually sent in the message, instead a request is made for Chat to play the sound file on the recipient's computer. If the sound file is on the recipient's computer in the specified path, the recipient can hear the sound that you selected. Since several sound files are installed on your computer by Windows, many Chat users may have a similar set of files on their computers.

NOTE: Chat can play .wav or .mid sound files when you send or receive a request for a sound in the specified search folder.

To Send a Sound with a Message

To send a sound with a message, follow these steps:

  1. Click Play Sound at the bottom of the Chat window.
  2. Click the sound file you want to send with the message.

NOTE: To preview a sound before you send it, click Test.
  3. In the Accompanying message box, type the message you want to send with the selected sound.
  4. Click OK.
To hear the sound for a message, the sound file must be on your computer in the Chat Sound Search Path. To specify the Sound Search Path to a folder that contains sound files, follow these steps:

  1. On the View menu, click Options.
  2. Click the Settings tab.
  3. In the Sound Search Path box, type the path to the folder that contains the sound files you want to use in Chat and click OK, for example,

    <drive>:\<windows>\media

where <drive> is the drive letter on which the Windows folder is located, and <windows> is the name of the folder in which Windows is installed.
To specify search paths for multiple folders type a semicolon (;) after each complete path, and then type the path for each additional folder, for example,

<drive>:\<windows>\media;<drive>:\<windows>\sounds

where <drive> is the drive letter on which the Windows folder is located, and <windows> is the name of the folder in which Windows is installed.

To browse, click the button to the right of the Sound Search Path box, and then click the folder that you want to search for sound files. When you click OK, the semicolon is automatically inserted between the complete path for each folder that you want to search for sound files.
