You can configure Chat to respond to one or more events by creating rule sets and rules. For example, when a friend joins a chat room you can create a rule to play a sound on your computer, or you can create a rule to send your friend a whisper. Since rules are processed in the order that they are listed in Events under Rules Of Selected Set, you can set up a sequence of rules that follow one another.

Create a Rule Set

To create rules, you must first create a rule set. To create a new rule set, follow these steps:

  1. On the View menu, click Automation.
  2. Click the Rule Sets tab, and then click Create Set.
  3. In the Rule Set Name box, type a name for the rule set.
  4. Click OK, and then click OK.

Create a Rule

To create a rule in a rule set, follow these steps:

  1. On the View menu, click Automation.
  2. Click the Rules tab, click to select the Rule Set that you want to create a rule for, and then click Add Rule.
  3. In the Event box, click the event that you want.
  4. In the Event Parameter box, click the parameter that you want, or type the parameter.
  5. In the Actions box, click the action that you want.
  6. In the Action Parameter box, click the action that you want, or type the action.
  7. To create additional rules for the rule set, repeat steps 2-6.
  8. Click OK, and then click OK.

Edit a Rule

To edit a rule, follow these steps:

  1. On the View menu, click Automation.
  2. Click the Rules tab, click to select the rule set that contains the rule that you want to edit, and then click the rule.
  3. Click Edit Rule, make the changes that you want, click OK, and then click OK.

Duplicate a Rule

To create a new rule based on an existing rule, follow these steps:

  1. On the View menu, click Automation.
  2. Click the Rules tab, click to select the rule set that contains the rule that you want to base a new rule on, and then click Duplicate Rule.
  3. Click to select the duplicate rule, click Edit Rule, make the changes that you want, click OK, and then click OK.
