XL98: "<File name> could not be found" Error Clicking Object (187659)

SYMPTOMS

In your worksheet, when you click an object that has a macro assigned to it, you may receive the following error message:
'<workbook name>' could not be found. Check the spelling of the file name, and verify that the file location is correct.


If you are trying to open the file from the list of most recently used files on the File menu, make sure that the file has not been renamed, moved, or deleted.

CAUSE

You may receive this error message if all of the following conditions are true:
  • Your hard disk name begins with text that qualifies as a valid cell reference, followed by a space character. For example, your hard disk drive name is "G3 Drive." -and-

  • Your workbook is saved. -and-

  • You assign a macro to an object on a worksheet or you reassign a macro to an object that already has a macro assigned to it. -and-

  • You click the object to run the macro.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:

  1. Save and close any open workbooks.
  2. On the File menu, click Quit.
  3. Change the name of your hard disk so that it no longer begins with a valid cell reference followed by a space character. For example, change "G3 Drive" to "G3Drive."
  4. Start Microsoft Excel.

    NOTE: After you perform step 3, Microsoft Excel must be re-registered.
  5. Open the workbook with the objects that produce the error described in the "Symptoms" section of this article.
  6. Press and hold down the CONTROL key, and click the object once. Click Assign macro on the shortcut menu.
  7. Click the name of the macro you want assigned to the object. Click OK.
  8. Click any cell in the worksheet.
  9. Click the object. The macro assigned to the object will run without an error.
  10. To save the changes made in the workbook, click Save on the File menu.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition.
