Duplicate Bitmap Fonts Appear in Fonts Tool After Upgrade (187658)

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade Microsoft Windows 3.x or Microsoft Windows for Workgroups 3.x to Windows 98, the following bitmap fonts (.fon) may by listed twice in the Fonts tool in Control Panel:
  • MS Sans Serif
  • MS Serif
  • Small Fonts
  • Courier
NOTE: Other bitmap fonts may be listed twice if you installed them separately.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Fontreg.exe file that is run during Windows 98 Setup incorrectly migrates Windows 3.x and Windows for Workgroups 3.x .fon files.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, delete duplicate bitmap fonts in the Fonts tool. To do so, right-click the font you want to delete, and then click Delete.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 98.
