INFO: Port Number Allocation When Passing over TCP/IP (187596)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft NetMeeting 2.1 Software Development Kit (SDK)
This article was previously published under Q187596 SUMMARY
What specific port number can be used for the NetMeeting audio and video
traffic when passing over a Firewall?
In H.323, the standard protocol that NetMeeting uses for audio and video,
only the first port number (1720) is static. After the initial connection,
a dynamically assigned TCP port number is negotiated for some more control
data to be exchanged. Following that, dynamic User Datagram Protocol (UDP)
ports are negotiated for the actual exchange of media. There is no way to
configure NetMeeting to use a specific port because this dynamic
negotiation is part of the H.323 standard.
