The information in this article applies to:
This article was previously published under Q187580 SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to reinstall Windows 98, you may receive the following
error message:
SUWIN Warning SU0167, the specified directory contains a directory
named desktop that you must move or rename before Setup can continue.
For more information, see SETUP.TXT on Setup Disk 1 or the Windows
CD-ROM.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if you upgrade to Windows 98 from Microsoft
Windows 3.1x, uninstall Windows 98, and then reinstall Windows 98. The
error message occurs if you create files or folders on the desktop in
Windows 98 before you uninstall Windows 98. If you do so, the Desktop
folder is left in the Windows folder when you uninstall Windows 98. You
receive the error message because Windows 98 Setup cannot create a Desktop
folder if one already exists.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, rename the Windows\Desktop folder to
Windows\Old.Desktop before you reinstall Windows 98. After Windows 98
Setup is finished, you can move your files or folders from the
Windows\Old.Desktop folder to the Windows\Desktop folder. To rename the
Windows\Desktop folder at a command prompt, type the following lines,
pressing ENTER after each line:
cd\windows move desktop old.desktop
