Cannot Connect to Desktop Computer with Internet Explorer 4.0 (187544)

SYMPTOMS

After you install Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0, you may be unable to establish a connection between a Handheld PC (H/PC) or Palm-size PC (P/PC) and the desktop computer.

You may also receive the following error message:
The specified communications port is not available.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, restart the desktop computer. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Shut Down.
  2. Click the Restart option, and then click OK.
Note that this issue occurs only the first time you start your computer after you install Internet Explorer.
