Dr. Solomon's WinGuard Anti-Virus Is Disabled After Upgrade (187538)

After you upgrade Microsoft Windows 95 to Windows 98, Dr. Solomon's
WinGuard Anti-Virus is no longer started automatically when you start
Windows 98.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs because a virtual device driver (.vxd) included with
versions of WinGuard Anti-Virus earlier than version 7.81 can cause your
computer to perform slowly and stop responding (hang) when you attempt to
gain access to your floppy disk drive. For this reason, Windows 98 Setup
disables WinGuard Anti-Virus.
RESOLUTION
To work around this behavior so that WinGuard Anti-Virus is started
automatically when you start Windows 98, use either of the following
methods:
Method 1
Obtain WinGuard Anti-Virus version 7.81 or later from Dr. Solomon's
Software Ltd.
Method 2
If you are using WinGuard Anti-Virus version 7.81 or later, manually start
it. You have an option to re-enable WinGuard Anti-Virus, which results in
it being run every time you start Windows 98.
NOTE: If you are using a version of WinGuard Anti-Virus earlier than
version 7.81, Microsoft recommends that you obtain a later version of
WinGuard Anti-Virus instead of re-enabling it.

Microsoft has confirmed that this behavior is not caused by a problem
in Windows 98, but may be caused by design changes in Windows 98. For
