This article was previously published under Q187517 SYMPTOMS
After you remove programs such as Internet Explorer or Proxy Server by
using the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel and then try to
uninstall Small Business Server (SBS), an error similar to the following
will be displayed:
Setup of Microsoft Small Business Server failed. The specific error code
is 0xc9ef18. Setup will continue but the component may not function
properly.
NOTE: The error code may be different.
CAUSE
Removing individual components of SBS from Add/Remove Programs removes the
registry entries and components of SBS that allow SBS to be successfully
uninstalled.
RESOLUTION
Remove components of SBS by selecting SBS in Add/Remove Programs. In the
next dialog box, click to clear the check box of the components you want to
remove. By default, the individual components or programs that are included
with SBS are listed in the list of installed programs. However, they should
not be removed individually.
