SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project 4.0, 4.1, and 4.1a, when you open an MPX 4.0 file that was saved in Microsoft Project 98, the finish date for a task may not be the same as it was in Microsoft Project 98.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when all of the following conditions are true:

  • The percent complete on a task is greater than 0 but is less than 100.

    -or-

  • You rescheduled remaining work on a task to a new date in the Update Project dialog box.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, edit the MPX file by following these steps:

  1. Click the Start button, point to Programs, point to Accessories and then click Notepad.
  2. On the File menu, click Open.
  3. In the File Name box type the full path and file name of the MPX file you want to edit and then click Open.
  4. Locate the line that begins with 61.

NOTE: The data on this line is comma separated.
  5. Within this line, locate the number 151 and change it to 152.
  6. On the File menu click Save.
  7. On the File menu click Exit.
When you reopen the MPX file in Microsoft Project 4.0, 4.1, or 4.1a, the task should now have the expected finish date.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Project listed above.
