PUB98: "Error Reading CD-ROM" Error Running Setup (187262)
The information in this article applies to:
This article was previously published under Q187262 SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to install Microsoft Publisher 98 from the Microsoft
Office Small Business Edition Version 2.0 compact disc 1, you may receive
an error message similar to the following
Error Reading CD-ROM in Drive D.
where D is the drive letter for your CD-ROM drive.
CAUSE
This problem occurs after starting Publisher 98 Setup from the Microsoft
Office Small Business Edition Version 2.0 compact disc (disc 1). The
operating system may not detect that the compact disc in the CD-ROM drive
has been changed or the CD-ROM drive may have a problem reading the compact
disc. Some possible causes for these behaviors are:
- Your system is configured with 16-bit drivers for the CD-ROM driver.
- One or more Terminate-and-Stay Resident (TSR) programs are running in
memory.
- You are using an older model CD-ROM drive and your CD-ROM drive may not
be notifying the operating system that the compact disc was changed.
- The compact disc is dirty.
Note that there may be other, as yet undetermined, causes for these
behaviors.
WORKAROUND
To work around this behavior, start the Publisher 98 Setup program from
the second compact disc. To do this, follow these steps:
- Insert the Microsoft Office Small Business Edition compact disc into
your CD-ROM drive.
- On the Start menu, click Run.
- Type <disk>:\Setup.exe, where <disk>
is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive.
- Click OK.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products
listed at the beginning of this article.
MORE INFORMATION
Microsoft Office Small Business Edition version 2.0 provides an
installation shell program for installing the programs that ship with the
Small Business Edition. This shell is not an integrated Setup program. It
provides an interface that runs the Setup program for each of the
application programs included in the compact disc set. This interface may
prompt you to insert a compact disc before continuing the installation
process. When you change compact discs, the CD-ROM
drive notifies the operating system and the operating system must be able
to detect the change. If this does not happen, the Setup program fails and
you receive the message described in the "Symptoms" section of this
article.
