The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition
- Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition
- Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition
- Microsoft PowerPoint 98 Macintosh Edition
This article was previously published under Q186768 SYMPTOMS
When you start any of the Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition programs
listed at the beginning of this article, you may receive an error message
similar to the following:
The application "Microsoft Excel" has unexpectedly quit, because an
error of type 3 occurred.
You should save your work in other open applications and restart the
computer.
CAUSE
This problem occurs if both of the following conditions are true:
- An outdated version of Microsoft OLE Automation exists in your System
Folder:Extensions folder.
-and-
- This is the only extension installed by Office 98 that is an outdated
version.
NOTE: The installers for the following third-party programs install earlier
versions of the Microsoft OLE Automation and Microsoft OLE Library
extensions:
Adobe Photoshop 5.0
NetObjects Fusion 2.0.2
Quark XPress 4.0
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
- Move Microsoft OLE Automation from the System Folder:Extensions folder
to the Trash.
NOTE: If you have Photoshop installed, move the Microsoft OLE Automation
version 2.06 file from the System Folder:Extensions folder to the
Photoshop program folder on your hard drive.
- Start any Office program.
The first run installation process is started and the file is replaced with
the version that is installed by Office 98. Also, if you have other Office
98 files in your System Folder that are the wrong version, the first run
installation process replaces them with the correct version.
