WD98: Opening Word File Displays Network Logon Dialog in Chooser (186440)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition

This article was previously published under Q186440

SYMPTOMS

When you open a Word document that contains embedded QuickTime files, the Chooser dialog box appears requesting that you log on to a remote server.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if the QuickTime file was located on a network server that you later unmount from the Macintosh desktop.

The server path and user logon information are stored in the Word file, so that when you open the document, the Macintosh attempts to remount the server volume containing the QuickTime file. If the server volume is unavailable, a standard Apple server logon dialog box appears.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

If you connect to the original server volume, Word will open the file normally, and the inserted QuickTime movie should work.

If you cannot connect to the original server volume or if you click Cancel in the Chooser dialog box, Word will search the local hard disk and other server volumes that you are connected to for a copy of the original QuickTime file. If it cannot find a copy, Word will represent the QuickTime file with either the default QuickTime placeholder or by a poster frame if one is present.
