The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 98

This article was previously published under Q186228

SYMPTOMS

After you install SimTown version 1.0 and restart your computer, the Show Desktop and View Channels icons on the taskbar may appear as small houses. Also, if you click one of these icons, you may receive an Open With dialog box that prompts you to choose a program to use to open the View Channels.scf file or the Show Desktop.scf file.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because SimTown alters the .scf file association.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, manually edit the .scf file association. To do so, use the following steps:
  1. Double-click My Computer, click Folder Options on the View menu, and then click the File Types tab.
  2. In the Registered File Types box, click SimTown Sounds, and then click Edit.
  3. In the Description Of Type box, type Windows Explorer Command, and then click New.
  4. In the Action box, type Open, and then in the Application Used To Perform Action box, type c:\progra~1\intern~1\iexplore.exe.
  5. Click the Use DDE check box to select it, and then type [ShellFile("%1","%1",%S)] in the DDE Message box.
  6. In the Application box, type Folders, and then type AppProperties in the Topics box.
  7. Click OK, click Change Icon, click Browse, choose an icon to replace the missing icon, click OK, and then restart your computer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this behavior is not caused by a problem in Windows 98, but may be caused by design changes in Windows 98. For more information about resolving this issue, contact the program's manufacturer.
