OFF98: Movie Changes to Picture When Source Is Not Available (186170)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition
- Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition
- Microsoft PowerPoint 98 Macintosh Edition
This article was previously published under Q186170 SYMPTOMS
When you open a document in any of the Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh
Edition programs, you may receive the following error message:
Please insert the disk:
<name of your CD or floppy>
If you click Cancel, you receive the following error message
The movie file <file name> cannot be found. Without this file, the movie
cannot play properly.
and you can either click Cancel or Search.
NOTE: You may only see the second error message and not the first.
Also, if you click Cancel to both error messages (or just to the second one
if that is all you see), the movie object is converted to a picture and
cannot be run. If you then save your document with the movie displayed as a
picture, the movie will be permanently converted to a picture.
CAUSE
You may receive these error messages if both of the following are true:
- You are trying to open a document that has a movie inserted in it (on
the Insert menu, click Movie).
-and-
- The movie you inserted into the document is no longer available.
NOTE: You will be prompted for the compact disc or floppy disk if that was
the source of your movie file when you inserted it into your Office program
document. If the source was a network drive, you may only see the second
dialog box.
When you insert a movie into an Office program document, the movie file is
not embedded in the document; rather, a link to the movie file is added to
the document. This is why you are prompted to insert the disk that
contained the movie file and/or to search for the movie file if the
original source is unavailable when you open the Office document.
RESOLUTION
To prevent the error messages listed in the "Symptoms" section from
appearing when you open a document with a movie in it, make sure the source
of the movie is available when you open the document. Or, if you are
prompted for a disk when you open the document, insert the disk instead of
clicking Cancel.
If the original movie is not available in its original location, click
Search when you receive the second error message. Then, locate and select
the same movie file in a different location. Note that you cannot select a
different movie file when you are searching in this dialog box.
STATUS
This is by design of Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition programs.
