OFF98: AutoCorrect Changes URL in Web Toolbar Address Box (186008)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition
- Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition
- Microsoft PowerPoint 98 Macintosh Edition
This article was previously published under Q186008 SYMPTOMS
If you type a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) in the Address box of the Web
toolbar, some lowercase letters may be changed to uppercase, and some
uppercase letters may be changed to lowercase.
CAUSE
The letters in the URL you type in the Address box may change case if you
previously entered the same URL in the Address box. The AutoCorrect feature
of Microsoft Office determines that you have already entered the text of
the URL and adjusts the text to match the case with the text you entered
the first time.
NOTE: This is true even if you first enter the URL in one Microsoft Office
98 Macintosh Edition program and then type it again in a different Office
program. This behavior occurs because all Office programs share the same
preference file that stores these addresses.
WORKAROUND
Normally, you should not have any problems when the text you type in the
Address box is automatically corrected. However, some Web servers are case-
sensitive, and you cannot access the server if the case does not match.
To work around this problem, use one of the following methods.
Method 1: Remove All Items on the Address Box
If you entered the text of a URL with the incorrect case, clear the entire
list of addresses that appear when you click the Address box list. To do
this, follow these steps:
- Quit any Office programs that are currently running.
- Open the <hard drive>:System Folder:Preferences folder.
- Move the Microsoft Office Settings(8) file to the Trash.
- Restart any Office program.
- Click the Address box list.
The list does not have any items.
Method 2: Alternative Method for Entering URL
If you want to maintain the list of items that is currently displayed in
the Address box list, but you want to enter a URL with a case that is
different from the URL you have previously entered, follow these steps:
- On the Web toolbar point to Go and then click Open.
- Type the URL in the Address box.
- Click OK.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products
listed at the beginning of this article.
