XL98: Error Messages Closing WK4 File (185585)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel 98, when you open and then close a workbook that was saved in WK4 (1-2-3) format, you may receive the following error message:
The application "Microsoft Excel" has unexpectedly quit, because an error of type 10 occurred.

You should save your work in other open applications and restart the computer.
-or-

Microsoft Excel just quits.

CAUSE

This problem occurs only when you perform the following steps:
  1. You group two OLE objects together on a worksheet.
  2. You then save the workbook in WK4 (1-2-3) file format.
  3. You then close the workbook.
  4. You then reopen and then close the workbook.

WORKAROUND

To prevent this issue from occurring, do not group OLE objects if you are going to save in WK4 (1-2-3) format.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Excel 98.
