SUMMARY

Microsoft Word currently does not convert files from WordPerfect versions 7.0 and 8.0.

However, WordPerfect 7.0 uses a default Save As format of WordPerfect 6.0, which Microsoft Word can convert.

WordPerfect 8.0 uses a default Save As format of WordPerfect 6/7/8, so a version of Microsoft Word capable of importing WordPerfect 6.x can also convert these files.

This article describes additional issues with converting WordPerfect 7.0 files, which depend on what version of Word you are using.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft Word for Windows 95 Versions 7.0 and 7.0a

The WordPerfect 6.x converter ships with Word 7.x, and is part of the Typical installation. To convert a WordPerfect 7.0 file, simply locate and double-click the file using the Open dialog box in Word. Word will convert the WordPerfect 7.0 document, provided it was saved in the default (WordPerfect 6.0) format.

If you receive the following error after the conversion begins
The file is not right file type. (WordPerfect 6.x)
the file was saved in WordPerfect 7.0 format and you will not be able to open it.

If Word does convert the document, remember that this is an import conversion only. If you need to use the same file for both Microsoft Word and WordPerfect 7.0, the preferred file format is WordPerfect 5.1 for MS- DOS.

NOTE: If the "Confirm conversion at Open" option is selected, WordPerfect 6.x will automatically be selected in the Convert File dialog box; just click OK. If it is not selected, the WordPerfect 6.x import converter is not installed. You will need to run Setup and add this.

For more information about installing converters in Word 7.x, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Microsoft Word 6.x

The WordPerfect 6.x converter does not ship with Microsoft Word 6.x. You must obtain and install WordPerfect Supplemental Converters for Microsoft Word for Windows. There are separate 16-bit and 32-bit versions for Word 6.0 for Windows and Word 6.0 for Windows NT respectively.

For more information on how to obtain these supplemental converters, see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base articles:

After installing the converters, follow these steps:
  1. Start Microsoft Word.
  2. On the File menu, click Open.
  3. Click to select the Confirm Conversions check box.

NOTE: If this check box is missing, there is a FileOpen macro active that is running in place of the FileOpen command. Remove that macro and the default Open dialog box will be available again.
  4. In the Files Of Type list, click "All files (*.*)."
  5. Locate and double-click the WordPerfect 7.0 document file.
  6. Click to select WordPerfect 6.0 in the Convert File dialog box.
Word now converts the WordPerfect 7.0 document, provided it was saved in the default Save As format (WordPerfect 6.0).

If you receive either of the following errors after the conversion begins
File is not a WordPerfect document

-or-

The file is not right file type. (WordPerfect 6.x)
the file was saved in WordPerfect 7.0 format, and you will not be able to open it.

If Word does convert the document, remember that this is an import conversion only. If you need to use the same file for both Microsoft Word and WordPerfect 7.0, the preferred file format is WordPerfect 5.1 for MS- DOS.

NOTE: There is not currently a WordPerfect 6.x converter available for Microsoft Word versions 6.0, 6.0.1, or 6.0.1a for the Macintosh.

WordPerfect 6.0, 6.1, 7.0 and 8.0 all use the same format for their files, but WordPerfect 7.0 uses a different header if you save a document using the "WordPerfect 7.0" Save As format option.

Converters in Microsoft Word 6.0 and 7.0 cannot import WordPerfect 7.0 documents because of this header. However, converters in Microsoft Word 97 operate differently than earlier versions, and can import WordPerfect 7.0 documents.
