OFF98: Unbind Changes Extended Characters in Section Name (185234)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition

This article was previously published under Q185234

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Unbind program that is included in the Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition Value Pack to unbind the sections in a binder, the names of the unbound sections may contain squares or other characters.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the names of the sections contain any extended characters, such as letters that include accents, circumflexes, cedillas, umlauts, or other diacritical marks.

WORKAROUND

If this problem occurs, use the Finder to rename the unbound sections. The contents of the sections are not affected by this problem; after you rename the unbound sections in the Finder, you can work with the sections as you normally would.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The Unbind program that is included in the Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition Value Pack allows you to extract the sections from a binder file and save them as separate workbooks, documents, and presentations.

To use the Unbind program, follow these steps:
  1. Start the Unbind program.
  2. On the File menu, click Open Binder.
  3. In the dialog box, select the binder that contains the sections you want to unbind. Then, click Open.
If the names of any of the sections contain extended characters, the extended characters may not be converted properly from the Windows environment to the Macintosh environment. As a result, the characters may appear as squares or other extraneous characters.
