OL98: First Run Hangs When Creating Sample Appointment (185172)

SYMPTOMS

After completing Active Setup you start Microsoft Outlook 98 for the first time and when you attempt to create a sample appointment item the computer stops responding (hangs).

CAUSE

You are using a Compaq Presario computer with the Compaq Telephony Application Programming Interface (TAPI) service implemented in the Telephony control panel.

RESOLUTION

Disable the Compaq TAPI service. To disable the telephony service, follow these steps.
  1. Quit Outlook if it is currently open.
  2. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click Telephony.
  4. Click "Compaq Telephony Service Provider," click Remove, and click OK.
  5. Close Control Panel, and restart your computer.
