No Program Groups Are Available When You Open Program Manager (185146)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 98

This article was previously published under Q185146

SYMPTOMS

When you click Start, click Run, type progman.exe, and then click OK, no program groups are visible in Program Manager. Also, if you click New on the File menu, the Program Groups dialog box may open automatically, instead of prompting you to choose to create a new program group or a new program item.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you install Windows 98 on a computer that does not already have an operating system (such as Windows 3.x or Windows 95) installed. Because of this, the Progman.ini file does not contain a Groups section with corresponding information about program groups.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, create custom program groups and program items to populate Program Manager. To do so, use the appropriate method:

Create a Program Group

  1. Click Start, click Run, type progman.exe, and then click OK.
  2. On the File menu, click New.
  3. In the Description box, type the name of the program group you want to create, and then click OK.
NOTE: You now have the option to create a program group or a program item.

Create a Program Item

  1. Click Start, click Run, type progman.exe, and then click OK.
  2. On the File Menu, click New.
  3. Click Program Item, and then click OK.
  4. In the Description box, type in the name of the program item you are creating, click Browse, open the folder that contains the program item you want, click the appropriate file, and then click OK.
