SYMPTOMS

When you start Windows Explorer, click a folder, and then click Delete on the File menu, you may not be warned about deleting read-only or system files that may be in this folder.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because Windows 98 ignores the file attributes of all files in a folder when you choose to delete the folder.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

Note that this behavior does not occur if you open a folder, select a file or multiple files, and then click Delete on the File menu. If you do so, and the folder contains read-only or system files, you receive the following warning message:
The file <file name> is a read-only <or system> file. Are you sure you want to move it to the Recycle Bin?
