PUB98: Commercial Printer Drivers Don't Install on Windows NT 4 (184655)
The information in this article applies to:
This article was previously published under Q184655 SYMPTOMS
When you install Publisher 98 on a Windows NT 4.0 computer, the commercial
printer drivers (Microsoft Publisher Imagesetter and Microsoft Publisher
Color Printer) are not installed. If you attempt to manually install these
drivers, you will receive the following error message:
Print driver for Windows NT x86 could not be installed. The system
cannot find the file specified.
CAUSE
Microsoft Publisher 98 includes a commercial printing feature. For this
feature to work, Publisher 98 requires a PostScript printer diver to be
installed. The Publisher 98 Setup program attempts to install two
PostScript printer drivers, the Microsoft Publisher Imagesetter and
Microsoft Publisher Color Printer. Because these drivers use the
Pscript.drv file and Windows NT requires Pscript.dll, Windows NT will not
allow these drivers to be installed.
WORKAROUND
In order to use the Create File in PostScript feature, you must install a
PostScript printer driver. You should contact your printing service to
determine what PostScript driver they are using for their printers and
install that driver or a compliant driver.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products
listed at the beginning of this article.
