OFF97 SR-1: Files Listed in Netwrk8.txt Are Missing (184156)

SYMPTOMS

If you install Microsoft Office 97, Service Release 1 (SR-1) on a computer that uses a shared copy of Microsoft Windows and you follow the directions in the Netwrk8.txt file, you cannot find the following files in the specified locations on your Microsoft Office 97 SR-1 compact disc:

Mdisp32.exe
Mdisp32.tlb
Wmsui32.dll

As a result, it appears that you cannot update your shared copy of Microsoft Windows.

CAUSE

The first two files, Mdisp32.exe and Mdisp32.tlb, are not available on the Microsoft Office 97 SR-1 compact disc because they are not required for use with Microsoft Office 97 SR-1.

The third file, Wmsui32.dll, is required for use with Microsoft Office 97 SR-1. However, it is stored in a location that is different from the location that is specified in the Netwrk8.txt file.

RESOLUTION

Mdisp32.exe and Mdisp32.tlb

These files are not required when you run Microsoft Office 97 SR-1. You do not need to copy them from the Microsoft Office 97 compact disc or anywhere else. The information in Netwrk8.txt is incorrect.

Wmsui32.dll

This file is stored in two different locations on the Microsoft Office 97 SR-1 compact disc. Copy ONE of the two files, depending on the operating system you are using. The version to copy is listed in the following table.

Copy the appropriate Wmsui32.dll file into your C:\Windows\System folder.

Regardless of whether or not you received the ole32.dll error you will need to manually copy these files from the CD to the shared Windows\system folder:

Where D: is the CD-ROM drive and C: is the drive containing the shared Windows\system folder.

The information about Mdisp32.exe and Mdisp32.tlb is incorrect in that these files should not be listed. The location that is specified for Wmsui32.dll is incorrect in that it refers to the wrong folder on the Microsoft Office 97 SR-1 compact disc.
