OL98: "Send To Mail Recipient" Does Not Use an Outlook Form (183766)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 98

This article was previously published under Q183766

SYMPTOMS

After installing Microsoft Outlook 98, if you right-click a file on the Windows desktop and point to Send To, the "Mail Recipient Using Microsoft Outlook" option is not listed.

Instead, if you choose to send it to a mail recipient (point to Send To and click Mail Recipient), this opens a blank, non-Outlook e-mail form. The file appears as an attachment in the body of the message and the path to the file appears in the subject line and body of the message.

CAUSE

Outlook 98 removes the Send To "Mail Recipient Using Microsoft Outlook" option on the shortcut menu.

RESOLUTION

Create a shortcut to Outlook 98 in the Windows\SendTo folder, with the "/c ipm.note" switch on the command line. To do this, follow these steps.

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, please consult your product documentation to complete these steps.
  1. In Windows Explorer, double-click to open the Windows\SendTo folder.
  2. Right-click on the background of the Contents pane (the large pane on the right), point to New on the shortcut menu and click Shortcut.
  3. Type the path or click browse to the Outlook.exe file.
  4. Following the last character on the Command line, type a space followed by /c ipm.note, for example: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Outlook.exe" /c ipm.note Note that the /c switch is outside the command line's quotation marks.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Type Mail Recipient Using Outlook in the "Select a name for the shortcut" window, and click Finish.
To test, right-click a file on the Windows Desktop, from the shortcut menu point to Send To, and click "Mail Recipient Using Outlook." An Outlook e-mail form should open containing only the file as an attachment.

MORE INFORMATION

Both Microsoft Office 97 and Microsoft Outlook 97 installed a file named Sendfile.exe. This added an option on the shortcut menu to Send To "Mail Recipient Using Microsoft Outlook." Installing Outlook 98 removes this file.
