WD98: Errors When Booting Word 98 from System CD (183634)

SYMPTOMS

After you install Office 98 Macintosh Edition and attempt to start Word 98 for the first time after starting your computer from a System CD, you may receive the following error message:
Word can't run the First Run Installer. There may not be enough free memory to launch the installer, the installer may have been moved, or your startup disk may be protected. Try the following:

Quit any other programs that are running to free memory. If virtual memory is off, turn it on and restart the computer.

Reinstall word to make sure that all the files needed to run Word are installed correctly.

Reboot from an unlocked startup disk and relaunch Word.

CAUSE

One or more of the four extension files (Microsoft Component Library, Microsoft OLE Automation, Microsoft OLE Library, Microsoft Structured Storage) is damaged, is the wrong version, or is not in the correct folder after installation.

WORKAROUND

Move the files to the System:Extensions folder.

For more information about locating files, click Contents And Index on the Help menu (or on the Balloon Help menu if you are using a version of the Macintosh operating system earlier than 8.0), click the Index button in Word Help, type the following text

files, finding

and then click Show Topics. Select the "Find files" topic, and click Go To. If you are unable to find the information you need, ask the Office Assistant.

NOTE: Apple includes the Find File utility with system software. You can access this utility both from the File menu in the Finder and on the Apple menu.

To move the files, follow these steps:
  1. Quit any open programs locate the folder containing the four files.
  2. When you have located the files, click each one and drag it to the Extensions folder, which is located in the System folder.
  3. On the Special menu, click Restart.
  4. Hold the COMMAND+OPTION keys until you are prompted with the message "Are you sure you want to rebuild the desktop file on the disk '<hard disk name> '?" Click OK.
  5. Double-click the Word 98 program icon to launch Word as expected.
NOTE: If these steps are not successful, reinstall Office 98.
