After you install Office 98 Macintosh Edition and attempt to start Word 98
for the first time after starting your computer from a System CD, you may
receive the following error message:
Word can't run the First Run Installer. There may not be enough free
memory to launch the installer, the installer may have been moved, or
your startup disk may be protected. Try the following:
Quit any other programs that are running to free memory. If virtual
memory is off, turn it on and restart the computer.
Reinstall word to make sure that all the files needed to run Word
are installed correctly.
Reboot from an unlocked startup disk and relaunch Word.
CAUSE
One or more of the four extension files (Microsoft Component Library,
Microsoft OLE Automation, Microsoft OLE Library, Microsoft Structured
Storage) is damaged, is the wrong version, or is not in the correct folder
after installation.
WORKAROUND
Move the files to the System:Extensions folder.
For more information about locating files, click Contents And Index on the
Help menu (or on the Balloon Help menu if you are using a version of the
Macintosh operating system earlier than 8.0), click the Index button in
Word Help, type the following text
and then click Show Topics. Select the "Find files" topic, and
click Go To. If you are unable to find the information you need, ask
the Office Assistant.
NOTE: Apple includes the Find File utility with system software. You can
access this utility both from the File menu in the Finder and on the Apple
menu.
To move the files, follow these steps:
- Quit any open programs locate the folder containing the four files.
- When you have located the files, click each one and drag it to the
Extensions folder, which is located in the System folder.
- On the Special menu, click Restart.
- Hold the COMMAND+OPTION keys until you are prompted with the message
"Are you sure you want to rebuild the desktop file on the disk
'<hard disk name> '?" Click OK.
- Double-click the Word 98 program icon to launch Word as expected.
NOTE: If these steps are not successful, reinstall Office 98.
