OFF98: Icons for Earlier Programs Appear When You Use Office 98 (183442)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition
  • Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition
  • Microsoft PowerPoint 98 Macintosh Edition
  • Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition

This article was previously published under Q183442

SYMPTOMS

After you install Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition, the icons for the Office programs are the same as the icons for earlier versions of Office programs.

NOTE: This behavior does not affect the functionality of the Office 98 programs.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the program files for an earlier version of Office have a newer installation date than the creation date of the Office 98 program files.

MORE INFORMATION

The creation date of the Office 98 program files always uses the same date as the files on the Office 98 compact disc (CD). However, earlier versions of Office use the date of installation as the creation date for the program files.

Reinstalling Office 98 does not restore the icons because the creation date of the Office 98 program files does not change.
