Memo-Resume Wizard Updater 1.0 Read Me
--------------------------------------
A problem has been identified in Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) that
can affect Office 98 Macintosh Edition or other applications that used
compiled VBA code (such as custom Office applications developed by
professional programmers). To date, only some wizards in Word 98 (Memo and
Resume; Newsletter, Calendar, and Agenda included in the Value Pack) have
been identified as being affected. No wizards in Excel or PowerPoint are
affected, and no recorded macros in any Office 98 applications should be
affected (unless they use compiled code, which most do not). The problem
has been identified on Apple machines with a G3 processor. However, it's
possible that other Macintosh machines with a large cache (512k) could also
be affected.
If the following two conditions are true, then you should install the
update:
- You use a G3 processor based machine (or have a machine with a 512k
cache or larger).
-and-
- You run some types of VBA compiled code (Word wizards mentioned above,
Word, Excel or PowerPoint add-ins, or some 3rd party applications; does
not include recorded macros).
Note: If you are not using a machine with very large cache (512k) and
running Wizards or some other compiled VBA code, this update will not
improve functionality and need not be installed.
To patch the existing copy of Visual Basic for Applications, the updater
will search for any existing copy of the file "Visual Basic for
Applications" and update it if necessary (from version 8.0 to 8.2).
To correctly update Office 98, follow these steps.
1. Save all files and close all Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition
applications.
2. Download the Memo-Resume Wizard Updater.hqx. This is a BinHexed file
that most browsers will automatically decompress and place on your hard
drive (If not, you can use an application such as Stuffit Expander or
BinHex 4.0 to decompress this BinHexed file). The decompressed
application is called "Memo-Resume Wizard Updater 1.0".
3. Run the Memo-Resume Wizard Updater 1.0 by double clicking it.
4. The updater will locate the file "Visual Basic for Applications" inside
the Office folder inside the Microsoft Office 98 folder.
5. If there are additional copies of the "Visual Basic for Applications"
file or other files that have the same Type and Creator signatures, they
may also be listed as files possible to update. The updater will not
exclude copies "Visual Basic for Applications" on a mounted file server
or a CDROM so it is possible for multiple copies of the file to be
listed. For the update to be successful, make sure that the "Visual
Basic for Applications" file inside the Office folder is the only
selected file.
6. Once the correct file is selected, click on the "Update" button.
This will create a new version of the file with the updated information and
move the old version of the file to the trash.
Note: The Memo-Resume Wizard Updater will only function correctly if
Microsoft Office 98 is installed and has had at least one application run
one time prior to running the updater.
Common Problems
---------------
When running the Memo-Resume Wizard Updater 1.0 the file "VB Localization
Library (1)" may appear in the list of files that can be updated. Do not
attempt to update this file. If you try to update the file the error,
"Resource has been modified ("VAR 128)"
Do not attempt to update "Visual Basic for Applications" if that file is
located on a locked volume, such as the Microsoft Office 98 CDROM. The
error "-5000 Access denied error" will result and the file will not be
updated.
