This article was previously published under Q183319 SYMPTOMS
When you run the Microsoft Office Upgrade Wizard (Offcln97.exe) that is
included in the Microsoft Office 97 ValuPack, you may receive the following
error message:
Upgrade Wizard -- Error
Unable to open file offcln97.OPC for reading. Make sure file exists and
has correct format.
In some cases, you may not receive an error message, and the Upgrade Wizard
does not run at all.
CAUSE
This problem may occur if you start the Upgrade Wizard by using either of
the following methods:
- You use a Shell command in Visual Basic for Windows or Visual Basic for
Applications.
The syntax of the command resembles the following:
Shell "E:\Offclean\Offcln97.exe"
Note that the command may include optional switches, such as "/a" or
"/l."
-or-
- You include a command to run the Upgrade Wizard in a script file in
Microsoft Test.
If you include the "/q" switch in the command to run the Upgrade Wizard,
you do not receive the error message, and the Upgrade Wizard does not run
at all.
This problem does not occur if you manually start the Upgrade Wizard by
double-clicking Offcln97.exe in the Windows Explorer or by using the Run
dialog box (on the Start menu, click Run) to run Offcln97.exe.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, add the path to the Offcln97.opc file to the
command that you use to start the Upgrade Wizard, for example:
Shell "E:\Offclean\Offcln97.exe E:\Offclean\Offcln97.opc"
By specifying the path to the .opc file that you want the Upgrade Wizard to
use, you can prevent the problem from occurring.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products
