PPT98: Poor Sound Quality in Recordings (183285)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft PowerPoint 98 Macintosh Edition

This article was previously published under Q183285

SYMPTOMS

When you record a narration for your PowerPoint presentation, the quality of the sound recording may be poor.

CAUSE

This may occur if you have virtual memory turned on or if your virtual memory settings are too high.

While Microsoft PowerPoint 98 runs more efficiently with virtual memory enabled, virtual memory can slow multimedia performance on some computers.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior and increase the sound quality of your narrations, follow these suggestions:

Speak Clearly into the Microphone

Rehearse your narration several times before recording. When you record your narration make sure you keep the microphone about 6 inches from your mouth at all times. Pronounce each word clearly.

Pause at Least Two Seconds Before Advancing to the Next Slide

Pause for at least two seconds after your last word, before you advance to the next slide in your presentation.

Change Virtual Memory Settings

If the previous two suggestions do not help increase the quality of your recordings, disable or lower your virtual memory settings temporarily. After you have finished recording your narration, you should restore your original virtual memory settings.
  1. On the Apple menu, point to Control Panels, and click Memory.
  2. In the Virtual Memory section, change the virtual memory amount to 1 megabyte (MB).
  3. Close the Memory control panel.
If lowering the size of the virtual memory pool did not help increase the quality of your recording, turn virtual memory off by following these steps:
  1. On the Apple menu, point to Control Panels, and click Memory.
  2. In the Virtual Memory section, click Off.
  3. Close the Memory control panel.
When you restart your computer, virtual memory will be turned off.
