PPT98: Memory Error, Hang Saving PowerPoint 98 File as 4.0 File (183226)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft PowerPoint 98 Macintosh Edition

This article was previously published under Q183226
For a Microsoft PowerPoint 2001 version of this article, see 274714.

SYMPTOMS

When you save a PowerPoint 98 presentation in the PowerPoint 4.0 format, you may receive one of the following error messages:
There is not enough memory to run PowerPoint. Increase the memory size with Get Info.

-or-

The application "Microsoft PowerPoint" has unexpectedly quit because an error of type 25 occurred.

CAUSE

The PP Translator 8-4 program does not have enough memory assigned to it to translate the presentation. By default, the preferred size is set to 4000 K. If you are attempting to translate a large PowerPoint presentation, 4000 K may not provide enough memory.

NOTE: If virtual memory is turned on, the default preferred memory size is 4000 K. If virtual memory is turned off, the default preferred memory size is 5739 K.

RESOLUTION

To resolve the problem, increase the memory size for the PP Translator 8-4 program by following these steps:
  1. Quit PowerPoint.
  2. Open the Macintosh HD:Microsoft Office 98:Office:Translators folder.
  3. Click to select the PP Translator 8-4 program icon.
  4. On the File menu, click Get Info.
  5. Increase the Preferred Size setting by 1000 K.
  6. Open the presentation and attempt to save it as a PowerPoint 4.0 presentation. If you still receive the error messages described in the "Symptoms" section of this article, repeat steps 1 through 5 to allocate additional memory to the PP Translator 8-4 program until you are able to save the presentation.

MORE INFORMATION

The PP Translator 8-4 translates PowerPoint 98 presentations to PowerPoint 4.0 format. This translator is an application program. In contrast, the other two PowerPoint translators (PP Translator 4-8 and PP Translator 7-8) are libraries, not application programs. Therefore, these translators use memory assigned to PowerPoint when translating.
