SYMPTOMS

When you check the audio settings for your sound card using the Multimedia tool in Control Panel, playback and recording settings may be unavailable on the Audio tab. In addition, the Speaker icon may not appear on the taskbar.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you are using a Sound Blaster 2.0 sound card. The playback and recording features of the Sound Blaster 2.0 sound card work only in Microsoft Windows 3.x.

MORE INFORMATION

Only Windows 3.x drivers are available for the Sound Blaster 2.0 sound card. As a result, you can use a Sound Blaster 2.0 sound card in Windows 95/98, but you cannot adjust playback, recording, or volume settings.
