WD98: No Response, "Word Is Updating Picture..." Message Displayed Continuously in Status Bar (183068)

When you attempt to insert a picture in Word, Word may appear to hang (stop
responding) and the following message will appear in the status bar:
Word is updating Picture in <file name>
This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:
- You have previously inserted a picture in the document.
-and-
- The "Picture in <file name>" window for that picture is open.
When you attempt to insert the second picture, Word opens a new (second)
"Picture in <file name>" window and attempts to update the new picture
every 1-2 seconds.
WORKAROUND
To avoid this problem, close the open "Picture in <file name>" window (make
the document window the active window) before you attempt to insert another
picture.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products
listed at the beginning of this article.
