This article was previously published under Q183029

SYMPTOMS

When you click the Tools menu, Auto Thumbnail is not available (dimmed).

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if any of the following are true:
  • You do not have an image selected.

    -or-
  • The image you have selected is smaller than the auto thumbnail size.

    -or-
  • The image you have selected is already a hyperlink.

RESOLUTION

Use one of the following methods to resolve this behavior and use the auto thumbnail feature:

Method 1: If you do not have an image selected

If you do not have an image selected, follow these steps to use the auto thumbnail feature:
  1. If you already have an image on the page, go to step 4.
  2. On the Insert menu, click Image.
  3. Select an image and click OK.
  4. Select the image and click Auto Thumbnail on the Tools menu.

Method 2: If you have an image selected

If your image is selected and the Auto Thumbnail command on the Tools menu is not available, set the auto thumbnail size so that it is smaller than the image you want to use. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Right-click the image and click Image Properties on the menu that appears.
  2. Click the Appearance tab. Note the image width (in pixels).
  3. Click OK.
  4. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  5. Set the Width in Pixels so that it is less than the width in pixels of the image. For example, if the image width is 200, set the auto thumbnail width to a value less than 200. This will be the size of the image that is displayed as the thumbnail.
  6. Click OK.
  7. On the Tools menu, click Auto Thumbnail.

Method 3: If the selected image is a hyperlink

If the selected image is a hyperlink, follow these steps to use the auto thumbnail feature:
  1. Right-click the image and click Image Properties on the menu that appears.
  2. Click the General tab.
  3. Delete any text in the Location box under Default Hyperlink. Click OK.
  4. On the Tools menu, click Auto Thumbnail.

MORE INFORMATION

When you save the page, you will save two copies of the image:

- <imagename>_small.gif or <imagename>_small.jpg
- <imagename>.gif or <imagename>.jpg

where <imagename> is the original name of the image you inserted onto the page.

FrontPage inserts the small image on the page as a hyperlink to the original image. You can specify more auto thumbnail options by clicking Options on the Tools menu in FrontPage Editor.

For more information about the Auto Thumbnail command, click the Index tab in Microsoft FrontPage Help, type the following text

and then double-click the selected text to go to the "To create a thumbnail image" topic.
