SUMMARY

Microsoft SNA Server 4.0 and Microsoft Host Integration Server 2000 or later can operate successfully in the same subdomain. The server computer that is running the oldest version (SNA Server 4.0) must be installed as the primary server. Features that are new to Host Integration Server 2000 cannot be used until all SNA Server computers in the subdomain are running Host Integration Server 2000 or later.

Although this article discusses how to run SNA Server 4.0 and Host Integration Server within the same subdomain, when you upgrade to Host Integration Server, Microsoft recommends that you implement an SNA subdomain that contains computers that are installed with the newer version of SNA Server or Host Integration Server 2000, and then you migrate clients to these new servers. This approach requires additional servers during the transition period, although it reduces the interoperability issues that are raised when you run SNA Server and Host Integration Server computers within the same subdomain. Back-level SNA clients are supported through SNA Server 4.0 and Host Integration Server servers, although Microsoft recommends that you upgrade older clients.

MORE INFORMATION

If a subdomain contains a combination of SNA Server 4.0 and Host Integration Server 2000, the configuration file of SNA Server 4.0 must be used because the Host Integration Server 2000 configuration file is not backward compatible. Host Integration Server can read earlier configuration files but cannot update the configuration file when SNA Server 4.0 is configured as the primary configuration server. To continue to use SNA Server 4.0 servers in the subdomain, You cannot use SNA Server Manager of Host Integration Server to perform any configuration tasks. You can use the SNA Server Manager of Host Integration Server to view configuration settings and to start and stop the services of the SNA Server 4.0 installations. When all servers are upgraded to Host Integration Server 2000, the last computer to be upgraded in the subdomain must be the primary server. The configuration file is upgraded and then automatically copied to all backup servers in the subdomain.
