OL98: Preview Pane Does Not Generate Read Receipts (182452)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Outlook 98, messages that are sent with a read-receipt will generate a non-read receipt to the sender if the message is only viewed in the Preview Pane.

CAUSE

The option for marking messages as read in the Preview Pane is turned off.

RESOLUTION

To mark messages as read in the Preview Pane, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. On the Other tab, click Preview Pane.
  3. Click to select "Mark messages as read in preview window."
NOTE: If you do not wish to make any changes to your Preview Pane settings, you can double-click a mail message to generate the correct read-receipt.

MORE INFORMATION

The Preview Pane allows you to read a message without having to double- click the message to open it. Because of this, if a message is sent with a read-receipt and is only viewed in the Preview Pane the message is not marked as being read. If the message is deleted a non-read receipt will be generated.
