XL98: Cannot Reset a Column to the Standard Width (181903)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition

This article was previously published under Q181903

SYMPTOMS

When you point to Column on the Format menu and click Standard Width, the column width is not reset to the Standard Column Width setting.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if you change the width of a column from the original width. Microsoft Excel cannot automatically reset the width of the column.

WORKAROUND

To manually resize the column to the width used by the Standard Width command, follow these steps:
  1. Click any cell in the column that you want to resize.
  2. On the Format menu, point to Column, and then click Standard Width. Note the width in the Standard Column Width box and click OK.
  3. On the Format menu, point to Column and click Width. In the Column Width dialog box, type a width that is equal to the Standard Column Width setting and click OK.
The column width matches the Standard Column Width setting.

NOTE: If you change the Standard Column Width setting, Microsoft Excel does not change the column to match the new Standard Column Width setting.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
