SYMPTOMS

If you click Open Office Document on the Start menu or on the Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar (OSB), select a file, and then click Open Read-Only on the Commands And Settings menu in the Open Office Document dialog box, the file is not opened in read-only mode.

Note that this problem does not occur when you open a file by using the Open dialog box in a particular program; the problem occurs only when you use the Open Office Document dialog box in Microsoft Office 97.

WORKAROUND

To open a file in read-only mode, click the Open command or the Open Database command on the File menu in the program in which you want to open the file, select the file that you want to open, and then click Open Read- Only on the Commands And Settings menu. The file is opened in read-only mode.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

When you install Microsoft Office 97 on a computer, two new menu commands, New Office Document and Open Office Document, are added to the Start menu and to the Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar. If you click Open Office Document, you can select a document that belongs to any of the programs listed at the beginning of this article, and then open the document.

In the Open Office Document dialog box, there are a series of buttons near the top of the dialog box. If you click the rightmost button, the Commands And Settings menu appears. If you select a file, and then click Open Read- Only on the Commands And Settings menu, the file is not opened in read-only mode.
