WD97: Index Updates Incorrectly with Modified Page Numbering (181699)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word 97 for Windows
This article was previously published under Q181699 SYMPTOMS
If you use the Insert menu to insert both page numbers and an index into
your document, you may see odd behavior when you change the page number to
start at anything other than 1. The page numbers and index numbers will not
display the same number. The index numbers will be correct, but the page
numbers will start at 1 instead of the number you specified.
CAUSE
This behavior is caused by the section breaks that Microsoft Word inserts
into a document automatically when you use the Insert menu method.
WORKAROUND
To avoid this type of behavior, insert all of the fields manually instead
of allowing Microsoft Word to generate them for you. The following
instructions identify the fields used in manually creating page numbers and
indexes.

To insert an Index field, follow these steps:
- On the Insert menu, click Field.
- Under Categories, select Index And Tables. Then, under Field Names,
select Index.
- Under Field Codes, click next to the field name and add any switches you
need. To do this, follow these steps:
- Click Options.
- Under Switches, select the appropriate switch.
- Click OK.
- Click OK.
Inserting a Page Field
To insert a Page field, follow these steps:
- On the Insert menu, click Field.
- Under Categories, select Numbering. Then, under Field names, select
Page.
- Click beside the field name under Field Codes and add any switches
you need. To do this, follow these steps:

- Under Switches, select the appropriate switch.
- Click OK.
- Click OK.
