The information in this article applies to:

  • MSPRESS Microsoft Windows 98 Resource Kit, Beta Release ISBN 1-57231-878-3

This article was previously published under Q181687

SYMPTOMS

When you insert the CD-ROM from the Microsoft Windows 98 Resource Kit, Beta Release, into your CD-ROM drive, a splash screen offers you the following options:

  • Interactive CD Sampler
  • Cool Video Clips
  • Browse This CD
However, if you click any of the three options listed above, you may see an error message as follows:

Please reinsert the Windows 98 CD-ROM.

This message will repeat until you click Cancel.

CAUSE

The splash screen is loaded by an Autorun program that runs automatically when you insert the Windows 98 Resource Kit Beta Release CD-ROM. However, the Autorun program was designed for the final release of Windows 98. The Resource Kit CD-ROM is set up slightly differently than the final release of Windows 98, to accommodate the Resource Kit utilities and extra information.

Because of the differences between the Resource Kit CD-ROM and the final release of Windows 98, the Autorun program does not recognize the Resource Kit CD-ROM as a Windows 98 CD-ROM.

WORKAROUND

To load the "Interactive CD Sampler," open Windows Explorer, select the Windows 98 Resource Kit Beta Release CD-ROM, and then open the following file:

\CDSample\Sampler.exe

To load the "Cool Video Clips," open Windows Explorer, select the Windows 98 Resource Kit Beta Release CD-ROM, and then open any of the files in the following directory:

\CDSample\Videos

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft Windows 98 Resource Kit, Beta Release, ISBN 1-57231-878-3.

MORE INFORMATION

This behavior also occurs on certain systems with the release version of the Microsoft Windows 98 Resource Kit, ISBN 1-57231-644-6. This problem only occurs if you are using the Windows 98 Resource Kit CD-ROM on a Windows NT 4.0 system.
