PRJ98: Project Hangs When Opening Project That Shares Resources (181645)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Project 98 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q181645

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project 98, when you open a file that shares resources with another project, Microsoft Project may stop responding.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when you do the following:
  1. You use the Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications Delete method to delete a task assignment within a resource pool (the source of the shared resources), while the project that contains the actual assignment is not open.
  2. You open the sharer file.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use either of the following methods:
  • Remove the task assignment from the project that contains the task, rather than from the resource pool. -or-

  • Open the project containing the task that the resource is assigned to prior to deleting the assignment from the resource pool.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Project listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft Project does not normally allow you to use the Delete method to delete a task assignment in a resource pool, if the project that contains the actual assignment is not open. When you manually try to delete a task assignment under these conditions, you will receive the following error:
The item or information you are accessing is in an unopened sharer file that is linked to this resource pool file.

To perform this action, open the sharer file.
