PRJ98: Scheduling Error When Linking Task to a Summary Task (181264)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Project 98 for Windows
This article was previously published under Q181264 SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Project 98, when you link a task to a summary task that
contains an inserted project as a subtask, you may receive the following
error:
This action will cause a scheduling conflict. Task <n> of "<project name>" is linked to a task that cannot move, and as a result the link cannot be honored.
Where <n> represents the number of the task and <project name> is the name of the project.
You can:
- Cancel. Avoid the scheduling conflict.
- Continue. Allow the Scheduling conflict.
NOTE: If you click Continue, Microsoft Project creates the link, but does not reschedule the inserted project. However, Microsoft Project does reschedule all subtasks under the summary task that are not part of the inserted project.
CAUSE
Microsoft Project cannot reschedule an inserted project that is a subtask
of a summary task, based on the summary task's predecessor relationship.
WORKAROUND
To work around this behavior, do not create a link to a summary task that
contains an inserted project as a subtask. Instead, create links to the
subtasks under the summary task, to create the relationship you want.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft
Project listed above.
