FP97: FrontPage Uses Host Name Not Fully Qualified Domain Name (180823)

FrontPage truncates the domain name values on a Windows 95 computer because, in most cases, the only significant portion of the domain name on an intranet is the host name.

In some situations, however, you may want to use the fully qualified domain name to access documents on your local Web server. You must first configure the FrontPage Server Extensions before you can use FrontPage to access your local Web server using the fully qualified domain name.

To configure the FrontPage Server Extensions, follow these steps:
  1. On the Windows Start menu, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Notepad.
  2. On the File menu, click Open.
  3. Select the Frontpg.ini file and then click Open.

    This file is typically located in the \Windows folder.
  4. Find the HostOverride= line in the [FrontPage 2.0] section of the Frontpg.ini file. Change the value of HostOverride so that it equals the fully qualified domain name, like this:

    [FrontPage 2.0]
    HostOverride=mycomputer.mydomain.com

  5. Save and close the file.

SUMMARY

When you start FrontPage Explorer, you receive a message box that contains the host name for your computer rather than the fully qualified domain name.

FrontPage and other applications may have trouble accessing your local Web server using a fully qualified domain name if the local computer is on an Intranet. Therefore, FrontPage truncates the fully qualified domain name and uses only the host name to access the Web server on your computer.
