PRJ98: Problems Changing Task Dependency in PERT Chart (180293)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Project 98 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q180293

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project 98, when you double-click a task dependency line in the PERT Chart, change the dependency Type or the Lag value, and click OK, you may receive the following error message:
There was problem linking these tasks. You cannot link a predecessor task twice to the same task.
If you then change the dependency Type to (None) or click Delete, the error message does not occur, but the relationship is not removed.

CAUSE

This error message occurs when the following conditions are true:

  1. You are working with a project that contains an inserted project.
  2. You expanded the inserted project to be able to view all tasks.
  3. A task in the project is a predecessor to a task in the inserted project.
  4. You attempt to change the task dependency Type or Lag in the PERT Chart.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, change the task relationship in the Gantt Chart instead of the PERT Chart. To do this, double-click the dependency line in the Gantt Chart to display the Task Dependency dialog box. You can then change the relationship Type or the Lag without receiving the error.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Project listed above.
