PRJ98: Inserted Project Is Not Displayed Properly (180289)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Project 98 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q180289

SYMPTOMS

When viewing an inserted project within an inserted project, in a consolidated file, you may see the following behavior:

  • The project does not display an outline symbol.

  • The Indicator column contains a project icon and a red circle with a slash through it.

  • When you place the pointer over the icon in the Indicator column, the following message is displayed:
This inserted project, 'C:\<path>\<file name>', is not valid. A project can be inserted only once in a consolidated project.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you have inserted the same project twice within a consolidated file.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, remove one of the duplicate inserted projects from the consolidated file.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Project listed above.

MORE INFORMATION

Normally, you cannot insert the same project twice into a consolidated file. If you do this, you receive the following message:
A project can be inserted only once in a consolidated file. Select a different project to insert.
However, this message is not generated when you insert two projects into a consolidated file, and those two projects contain the same inserted project. For example, you can insert Project1 into Project2 and Project3, and then insert Project2 and Project3 into a consolidated project. If you expand Project2, you will see Project1 as an inserted project. But if you expand Project3, you will see Project1 as an invalid project, because it was inserted twice into the same consolidated project.

NOTE: The name in the Task Name field might not match the file name of the inserted project. To verify the path and file name of an inserted project, follow these steps:

  1. Double-click the task name.
  2. In the Task Information dialog box, click the Advanced tab and look at the Source Project field.
