This article was previously published under Q180288 SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Project 98, opening a project from a database or importing
data from a file format other than .mpp (such as text, .csv or .xls format)
may generate the following error message:
An import error occurred.
Check row <n> column <n>.
This is not a valid date, or is outside the range for dates which is January 1, 1984 through December 31, 2049.
Type a date in the correct format: for example, 6/15/98 or June 15, 1998.
CAUSE
This error message occurs when the project that you are importing contains
a date outside the date range of the Microsoft Project calendar: January 1,
1984 through December 31, 2049.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft
Project listed above.
MORE INFORMATION
You can only enter dates outside the Microsoft Project calendar date range
using programs other than Microsoft Project 98. For example, you can save a
project in a database, open it in a program other than Microsoft Project,
and modify a date field within a project table to have a date of January 1,
1980.
NOTE: The row and column numbers in the error message do not actually locate the table or field containing the incorrect date.
