SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to run the Microsoft Office 97 Service Release 1 (SR-1) patch, you may receive the following error message:
The Patch has determined that your installation of Office cannot be updated at this time. Shutdown all running applications and re-run the patch, if the problem persists please consult the Microsoft Knowledge Base at http://support.microsoft.com/support/.

CAUSE

You have previously installed Outlook 98 and are now attempting to update your Office 97 installation with a version of the SR-1 patch designed to update Outlook 97. Outlook 98 updates the following Office support files:

Mso7enu.dll

The newer versions of these files cannot be updated by the original SR-1 Patch.

RESOLUTION

To correct this problem, download and run the updated Microsoft Office 97 SR-1 Patch that recognizes the presence of Outlook 98.

You can obtain the updated SR-1 Patch from the following address: Once you have downloaded the Patch, run it by double-clicking Sr1off97.exe. The patch should install correctly even if you have installed Outlook 98.
