PRJ98: Error or Delay in Project with Cross-Project Links (179918)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Project 98 for Windows

This article was previously published under Q179918

SYMPTOMS

When Microsoft Project recalculates a project that contains cross-project links, you may receive the following error message:
The start of task <x> <task name> of "<project name>" is before the project starts.
NOTE: You may also see this error message if there is an unexpected delay between the linked tasks, and you press F9 twice.

CAUSE

This error message occurs when tasks are linked between two projects (cross project links) and the link/relationship causes the successor task to start before the project start date of the linked project that contains the task.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use the method appropriate for your situation:

  • If you want the project to begin on this date, change the project start date of the inserted project that contains the successor task to match the finish date of the predecessor.

  • If you entered a constraint that results in a task start date earlier than the project start date, change either the constraint or the project start date.

NOTE: This assumes a task relationship of Finish to Start (FS).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Project listed above.
