OFF97: Installing Office 97 Products in Mixed-Mode Environment (179876)

SUMMARY

For the purposes of this article, the following statement defines a mixed- mode installation:

On the same workstation, some Microsoft Office 97 applications are installed in "Run from Network Server" mode and others are installed in "Local" mode to the same workstation.

For example, Microsoft Office 97 Standard is installed on a workstation in "Run from Network Server" mode and Access 97, Project 98, or Outlook is installed locally on the same workstation.

If you install Microsoft Office 97 products to workstations in mixed mode, make sure that you copy the Mso97.dll and Mso7enu.dll to the workstation by using the Add Files command in the Network Installation Wizard (NIW) to customize the setup files.

If an Office 97 application is installed to a workstation in a "Run from Server" mode Mso97.dll and Mso7enu.dll need to be added to customized setup files through the Network Installation Wizard because these files remain on the server.

If you subsequently install an Office 97 application to the hard disk drive of the workstation, the BinDirPath in the registry is updated to point to the workstation. This path is used as a pointer to the location of the Mso97.dll and Mso7enu.dll files. However, during the setup of the application, Setup recognizes that the files already exist (on the server) and does not copy them to the hard disk drive of the workstation.

If you add the two files to the customized setup routine, this forces the files to be copied to the workstation.

Adding the Mso97.Dll and Mso7enu.Dll files to the NIW

To add Mso97.dll and Mso7enu.dll to your Office 97 or Project 98 Run From Network Server Deployment Package using the Network Installation Wizard, follow these steps.

To update the Run from Network Server Deployment Package in the Network Installation Wizard, follow these steps:

Run the Network Installation Wizard version 2.1 on your customized "Run from Network Server" setup files, if they exist.

NOTE: If you have not created customized Run From Network Server setup files, then you will be creating them during this process. When creating new customized setup files, point to the Setup.lst file in the administrative installation location.

Proceed through the Network Installation Wizard screens to the Add Files dialog. Add both files (Mso97.dll and Mso7enu.dll) to the setup. These files should be in the \Office subfolder of your administrative installation location. The default destination path for these files is:

   <ProgramFilesFolder>\Microsoft Office\Office
```
NOTE: You may see default destination locations specified in the Destination list as:

   <ProgramFilesFolder>\Microsoft Office
```
If this is the case, append "\Office" to the end of the destination.
You will be prompted to copy the files to the folder you used for your customized setup files. Click Yes to each prompt.
Save the customized setup files in the folder you specified when you began using the Network Installation Wizard.
