OL98: Cannot Add Shortcut for a Single File to Outlook Bar (179747)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Outlook 98, you cannot add a shortcut to the Outlook Bar for a single file or program executable.

CAUSE

Outlook Bar shortcuts can only point to file system folders or Mail folders.

RESOLUTION

Follow these steps to create a folder that contains shortcuts to your programs and or files, and then drag that folder to the Outlook Bar.

Create a Folder for Program Shortcuts

  1. Click the My Computer icon in the Other Shortcuts group on the Outlook Bar.
  2. If the Folder list is not visible, click Folder List on the View menu.
  3. In the Folder List, click to select the location for the new shortcuts folder. If a folder already exists, skip to step 6.
  4. On the File menu, point to New, and then click Folder.
  5. Type an appropriate name for the folder, and then click OK.
  6. Drag the new folder from the Folder list to the Outlook Bar.

    A shortcut will be created on the Outlook Bar to the new folder.

Create Shortcuts to Your Programs or Files in the New Folder

  1. In Other Shortcuts on the Outlook Bar, click My Computer.
  2. In the Folder list, locate the folder that contains the program or file you want to have available in the new shortcut folder.
  3. Drag the file to the shortcut on the Outlook Bar.
To use the new shortcut folder, click the new icon on the Outlook Bar, and then double-click the file or program in the Outlook information viewer.
